Norske Kul Casino Resort: Cut From the Ice, Warmed by the Fire
Norske Kul Casino Resort is built directly into the moraine below Folgefonna, one of mainland Norway's largest glaciers — a low, angular casino resort structure of glass and dark stone that reads like something quarried rather than built. Fifty-two casino tables, an ice bar carved fresh each season, and a chain of sauna terraces make this casino resort a place where the only view is white ice against black rock.
A Quarry Family's Casino Resort
The name Norske Kul is a play on words: "kul" reads as the Norwegian slang for cool, and as a nod to the Kul family, stonemasons from Kvinnherad who quarried anorthosite from the Folgefonna moraine for three generations before opening a small card room for climbing guides and glacier researchers in 1994 — the seed of today's casino resort. The original building was little more than a quarry office with two tables and a wood stove. Guests kept coming back for the stove more than the cards, which is how the casino resort's defining contrast — cold outside, deliberately warm within — became the whole design brief for every expansion since.
Today the casino resort spans four low terraces stepped into the hillside, each one cantilevered slightly further out over the valley than the last, so that the casino floor, the ice bar, and the sauna terrace all technically hang over open air. It remains privately held by the Kul family, and the original quarry office — stove intact — now serves as a private card room for the casino resort's highest-tier members.
Fifty-Two Casino Resort Tables, Cut Into Three Faceted Halls
The floor is split across three angular halls that step down the hillside, each faced in glass on the valley side so the ice cap is visible from nearly every table. This casino resort operates under Norway's tourist-class casino concession, with an independent compliance office reporting directly to ownership.
The Blackjack & Baccarat Hall
Named for the glacier itself, this is the highest hall in the casino resort and the coldest-lit room in the building by design — pale blue overhead panels meant to echo ice light. Our senior dealers, several trained at casino resorts in Baden-Baden and Monte Carlo before joining Norske Kul, work this floor.
The Roulette Hall
Sixteen wheels, including three American double-zero tables, set around a sunken firepit lounge where spectators can watch the wheels without leaning over the rail.
The Slot Hall
Three hundred and ten machines from penny reels to a linked progressive network, housed in the casino resort's original stone quarry office — the same room the Kul family's first two card tables stood in back in 1994.
Casino Resort Table Minimums, for Planning Your Session
Standard limits at this casino resort apply between 17:00 and 03:00 daily. Isbreen Hall's two private alcoves may be booked in advance at bespoke limits — speak to your host at check-in or through the Rime Club desk.

Casino Resort VIP Tiers, and the Old Quarry Office
The Rime Club is Norske Kul Casino Resort's membership programme, named for the feathered ice that forms on the resort's window frames on the coldest nights. Members are recognised at three levels, each granting deeper access to the casino resort's private spaces.
Entry Membership
Open to guests averaging kr 4,000 or more per session across two visits. Includes priority seating in the Roulette Hall, complimentary ice bar entry, and a dedicated host during your stay.
The Isbreen Terrace
A private casino terrace adjoining Hall One, reserved exclusively for members, with its own sunken sauna and a small cellar of house-distilled aquavit served warm.
The Quarry Room
Our top membership: access to the original 1994 quarry office, now a single-table private card room with the same stove the Kul family lit on opening night, choice of dealer, and bespoke limits.
Kul Points
Every machine in the Kvernhuset hall enrols play automatically — no separate card needed beyond your room key. Points convert to dining credit, ice-bar reservations, or a discounted future stay.
Kvernhuset, Our Casino Resort's Flagship Dining Room
Named for the old mill building it now occupies, Kvernhuset serves a tasting menu built entirely around Hardangerfjord and glacier-valley produce, designed by chef Marte Lien, previously of a fjord-side restaurant in Ulvik. Reservations are recommended several days ahead for guests not staying at the casino resort; house guests may reserve at check-in or through the Rime Club desk.
Beyond Kvernhuset, the casino resort operates three additional venues: Steinstova, a casual all-day dining room near the casino entrance built into the original stone quarry wall; The Ice Bar, carved fresh from block ice each autumn and rebuilt through the winter season, serving spirits in glasses cut from the same block; and The Late Room, a firelit snack lounge open until 5am for guests coming off a long session at the tables.
164 Casino Resort Rooms and Cabins, Stepped Into the Hillside
Standard rooms at the casino resort occupy the two lower terraces, each with a partial or full glacier view. The upper terrace holds our named suite collection, bookable directly through the casino resort's reservations desk.

Tickets can be added to any room reservation, and Glacier and Anorthosite Tier members receive complimentary seating in the front rows, subject to availability.
The theatre's stage floor is set with heated stone drawn from the same quarry as the resort's walls, and its lobby bar, The Stovehouse, opens ninety minutes before curtain and stays open through last call at the tables.
The Casino Resort Ice Doesn't Move. Your Evening Still Can.

Our story
Norske Kul Resort AS was founded in 1994 by siblings Torbjørn and Solveig Kul, third-generation stonemasons whose family had quarried anorthosite from the Folgefonna moraine for two generations, who opened a two-table card room for glacier guides and researchers inside their quarry office. The name plays on the Norwegian slang "kul" — cool — and the family name itself, and every expansion since has kept the same brief: cold light outside the glass, deliberate warmth within it.
Today Norske Kul Resort AS operates the resort, casino, theatre, and four dining venues across four stepped terraces on the same hillside parcel, employing just over eight hundred staff across casino, hospitality, and entertainment. The company remains privately held by the Kul family, with Torbjørn's daughter, Ingeborg Kul, currently serving as Managing Director.
Licensing & oversight
Norske Kul Resort operates under a resort-class casino concession issued for tourist-tier casino operations, with an on-site compliance office reporting independently of hotel and casino management. All casino equipment is tested and certified by an accredited third-party laboratory on a rolling annual schedule, and the resort maintains a dedicated Responsible Gambling office staffed during all operating hours.

Responsible Gambling at Norske Kul Resort
Last reviewed: June 2026
Norske Kul Resort exists to provide entertainment, hospitality, and a memorable night by the ice — not to place any guest in financial or personal difficulty. Gambling should always remain a form of leisure, chosen freely and enjoyed within limits set in advance. This page explains the tools, support, and safeguards available to every guest, and how to reach independent help if you or someone you know needs it.
Know the signs
Gambling can become harmful when it starts to affect finances, relationships, work, or mental health. Common warning signs include chasing losses with larger bets, gambling with money set aside for essentials, hiding the extent of play from family or friends, feeling irritable or anxious when not gambling, and borrowing money to fund further sessions. If any of this feels familiar — to you or someone close to you — we encourage you to speak with our Responsible Gambling Office or an independent support service listed below.
Tools available at Norske Kul Resort
- Self-exclusion: Guests may request voluntary self-exclusion from the casino floor for six months, one year, or permanently. Once registered, re-entry is refused at all casino entrances, and the request cannot be reversed early by the guest's own request alone.
- Deposit and loss limits: For guests enrolled in Kul Points or the Rime Club, we can apply a daily, weekly, or monthly loss notification threshold that triggers a check-in from a host.
- Time-out periods: A short cooling-off period (24 hours to 30 days) can be requested at any casino reception without providing a reason.
- Session reminders: On request, floor staff will discreetly notify a guest after a set number of hours of continuous play.
- Restricted marketing: Guests who self-exclude are automatically removed from all promotional communication and Rime Club invitations for the duration of their exclusion.
Our commitments
- We do not knowingly serve alcohol to a visibly intoxicated guest at the casino tables, and floor supervisors are trained to pause play with a guest showing signs of distress.
- All dealers and pit staff complete annual responsible gambling training, including how to make a respectful, non-judgmental welfare check.
- No clocks are withheld and no guest is denied a request for a break, a glass of water, or a quiet room away from the floor.
- Guests must be 18 years of age or older to enter the casino floor at any time, without exception, and valid photographic identification is checked at every casino entrance.
